One of the things I love about fashion is that it gives me the chance to express my views. I can use what I wear and how I wear it to send a message. However, this isn’t a new trend at all. Fashion is, and always will be used as a means of personal expression. Whether it be a religious statement or a political one, the choice is up to its wearer. As Nina Garcia once said, ‘Style is a deeply personal expression of who you are, and every time you dress, you are asserting a part of yourself’. This is exactly what has inspired my post today, a list of feminist brands I’ve recently discovered.
Using fashion to make a statement is no longer rebellious. It is now something that is greatly welcomed in the fashion community. A prime example is Prabal Gurung’s A/W 2017 collection where he sent models down the runway wearing T-shirts with slogan’s such as ‘THE FUTURE IS FEMALE’, ‘LOVE IS LOVE’, ‘GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS’ and ‘REVLOUTION HAS NO BORDERS’. (I seriously need to get my hands on one of these t-shirts).

Despite the negative press that feminists sometime get, we have to look at the actual dictionary definition of feminism. Feminism refers to the “advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes”. This movement has one simple goal, the establishment of ‘political, economic, personal and social equality of sexes‘. Feminism isn’t about female superiority, it’s about equality and if you don’t stand for this, then I am seriously judging you.
Disclaimer: I do not claim to be an expert of feminism. I am still learning every day, doing my research on the issues that affect women so that I can form an opinion for myself.
One of my goals for this year was to shop more wisely and buy smarter. As a result of this (and because I’m a lover of great fashion), I am always on the lookout for brands that spread a positive message and here are 3 feminist brands that I’ve recently discovered.

- LAPP
LAPP (@lappthebrand) was created by Leomie Anderson in 2016. It is a brand that I love to support. The brand ‘is all about empowering women and promoting confidence, positivity, and unity through fashion and creating another platform to voice women’s issues’. Their main message is ‘championing women’s issues through fashion’.
Not only is LAPP a fashion brand, it is also a platform for any female and female-identifying individual to submit pitches and write thought-provoking articles on any topic that they wish. So if you feel like you have something to say, why don’t you submit your pitch to LAPP?
- Birdsong
Birdsong (@birdsonglondon) is another feminist brand that I’ve recently discovered. Birdsong’s main ethos is ‘no sweatshops, no Photoshop’. They pride themselves on creating fashion that is fair to women. Everything they do is done through a feminist perspective. One thing about Birdsong that makes them stand out to me is the fact that they employ women’s charities to make their apparel and in return, they give back up to 80% of their profits back to these charities. So, not only is Birdsong feminist to the core, they are also ethical. If you can’t support this, I don’t know what to tell you.

- Rani & Co
Rani & Co (@raniandco) is another feminist clothing and jewellery brand launched in 2017. Their mission is to showcase feminism in a positive light. Even better, with every purchase made, 5% of the profits are donated to Baale Mane charity. Baale Mane is a small charity in India that works to support and educate young girls. I’m in love with the simple and elegant slogan t-shirts of Rani & Co. and the positive ethos of the company makes them all the more better.
And that’s it! A list of 3 feminist brands I’ve recently discovered. I love what these 3 brands stand for and I can’t wait to discover more brands that spread this positive, well-needed message.
What are your views of feminism? Are there any other feminist and empowering brands that you’ve discovered? Let me know in the comments below.

I visited the websites of the feminist brands you linked above. I really like the LAPP. brand’s ‘My Body, My Rules’ Hoodie in a gorgeous shade of pink, the Birdsong Demeter Ruffle Top in Floral Persephone Print, and the graphic slogans on the Rani + Co. clothing.
You look fabulous rocking the LAPP. T-Shirt and LAPP. sweatshirt.
I find it very encouraging that so many younger women are demanding equality. I love and hope for the spread of feminism everywhere.
