We’re entering the second week of 2020. A new year, a new decade. As you might expect, I’ve had this urge to write down my hopes and desires for the year ahead. I am a big fan of new beginnings, and although time is a social construct (let’s not even get into that discussion), when the clock’s struck 00:00 on 01/01/2020, I felt excited for the possibilities as well as challenges the new year would bring. However, one thing has changed for me this year, I’m not going to write a list of resolutions (IKR, shocker). I find that every single year, I write a list of resolutions that I seem to never accomplish. I set a list of almost, unattainable goals and the pressure to keep and follow them really isn’t worth the stress.

Last year, my resolutions consisted of developing a better sleep routine, reading more and of course, developing a better fitness routine. However, I can admit that I didn’t tick off every single one of these goals. In fact, I think I only actually achieved 2 out of my 7 goals. Does that make me an unaccomplished person? I think not.
So, since making an actual list of resolutions that I feel compelled to tick off doesn’t seem to be working for me, I’ve decided to take a different approach this year. This year, I’m going to write an open letter to 2020. A letter to which I can look back on and reflect on at the end of the year. An open letter that doesn’t comprise of items I need to ‘check off’.
Just a quick disclaimer, this letter might be cringy AF, but to be completely honest, that’s just the type of person I am, so do bear with me.
Here we go…

Dear 2020,
2019 was the year of discovery for me. It was the year I really put myself out there and made a promise to myself that I won’t be holding myself back anymore. In 2020, I want to follow this trend. I want to discover and re-discover my passions. I want to be clear on where I’m heading.
Last year, I made so many amazing memories and I want to make more amazing memories with you. 2020, please make me feel accomplished and clear about my path by the year’s end.
I’m not going to be naïve and think that the year ahead would be all roses and daises. I know that there will be ups and downs, bumps in the road. But, I hope that the good will outweigh the bad. I hope that you bring with you joy, peace and unlimited happiness. However, in times where I would be faced with challenges, I hope that you would make me resilient and not discouraged my any disappointments or failures. I hope that you give me the strength to face these challenges head on and come out the other side full of courage.
I also look forward to the opportunities you will present to me. Opportunities that would allow me to challenge myself. Opportunities to realise my full potential. A chance to prove myself.
2020, I look forward to you proving me wrong. Proving me wrong about my worries and my irrational thoughts. Force me to let go of all my unhealthy coping mechanisms. Make me realise that there’s nothing to worry about. That everything will be ok and I’ve got you all figured out.
2020, help me understand that fear is false and change is nothing to be ashamed of. Help me embrace whatever positive changes come my way and be appreciative of them.
Help me stop procrastinating and playing with my own potential. I’m very hopeful about you, 2020, and I believe in your magic.
2020, please be good to me.
Bukola Veronica.

Your open letter to 2020 is very beautiful, thoughtful, and inspiring – I love it.
I also love the look of the outfit you styled and were wearing in the photos above.
You look absolutely stunning wearing it.

I love your decision to give yourself an open letter, instead of New Year’s resolutions! I think people break resolutions because they leave them very broad (Ex., I will exercise more…more than what?! Lol). However, your letter focuses more on what you will gain, learn, discover, not on what you are required to do. And, that is wonderful! No matter what life might throw at you this year, you will use it your advantage & gain something from it.

Yes, I found that resolutions never really worked for me at all cause they were too general and too broad for me. This was the best way for me to articulate what I really wanted from the coming year and I’m so happy you enjoyed it.

That’s a very positive approach to the year with a healthy mindset that there might be lessons to learn along the way that will help you build resiliency despite any immediate adversity faced!

Thank you so much. Life’s all about being resilient and making it through the worst of times.

I absolutely LOVE the idea you have turned the typical resolutions post on it’s head by addressing the new year as a letter. I especially agree that change is nothing to be feared! I wish you all the best in 2020.

Thanks so much! A letter was the only way I could articulate my thoughts on paper. I’m so happy you enjoyed the post. Good luck in 2020 babe.

I love the positivity in this and also your understanding that there will be bad times too! I love the idea of writing a letter rather than setting goals. I haven’t set goals for a while now for new year for many reasons. 2019 was very up and down for me and reading this post really made me feel better and more positive about 2020, great post xx

Thanks so much babe! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. A part of growing up and getting older is realising that there will be ups and downs and life isn’t linear. Hopefully we all have an amazing and positive 2020!
