For the past few days, the whole of Ireland has been covered in inches of snow due to what has been named “Storm Emma” and “The Beast From the East”. Because of Storm Emma, I’ve been cuddled up under my bed binge watching ‘White Collar’ on Netflix.
One thing about me is that I’m not a big fan of snow and just cold in general. I would much rather spend my days basking under the heat of the sun. So, being stuck under the duvet got me reminiscing about the time I spent in sunny Croatia last year.
A quick background regarding my Croatian trip. My friends and I decided to head to Croatia last August for a week. Instead of spending our week in one city, we decided to turn it into somewhat of a road trip along the Croatian coast. We started our week off in Dubrovnik and after two nights, we made our way to Split. After three nights in Split, we headed to Zadar before making our way back to Dublin.

The first thing I miss about Croatia is definitely the food! This is actually one of the things I love about travelling. Getting the opportunity to taste and experience different cuisines from different cultures is what makes me want to travel a lot more.
One thing I noticed about the Croatian cuisine is that there is a lot of seafood. Seafood was always on the menu of every restaurant we went to. Over the course of the week, I indulged in a lot of seafood. Seafood risottos, seafood pasta and just more seafood. To be honest, I think I was slightly addicted to seafood by the end of the week.
PS: Are you a fan of seafood? Let me know in the comments!

Another thing I loved about Croatia was the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables that were available to us. I remember when we went to Zadar, there was this gorgeous farmers market near our Airbnb. It was filled to the brim with beautiful fresh produce that were utterly delicious and amazing to look at. I definitely got my 5 a day!
Apart from the seafood and fruit available to us, I also miss the ice-cream that I had in Croatia. There were so many flavours, including mojito flavoured ice-cream (my absolute favourite), pistachio, mango, watermelon and a lot more. I honestly believe that the ice-cream I had in Croatia was one of the best ones I’ve had in my life so far (no exaggerations).
One place that I particularly remember which had amazing ice-cream was ‘Sladoledarna’. It is found in Old Town, Dubrovnik. The ice-cream there was utterly amazing, refreshing and just perfect! I could have had about 5 of them and that still wouldn’t be enough.

Another aspect of Croatia that I miss is the views and scenery. Throughout our week, we saw and basked in beautiful sights including the Krka Waterfalls, The Kornati Islands National Park, Salt Lake Mir and more. We also experienced the most beautiful sunsets and boat rides. Exploring (and getting lost) in the ancient cities of Old Town Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar was also an experience worth capturing.
Croatia is seriously a beautiful place and I can’t wait to go back and experience more of it. A week was definitely not enough to explore it all.

And that’s it! Storm Emma still rages on and I’m still snuggled under my duvet waiting for summer!
Have you been to Croatia? What country is on your travel bucket-list? Let me know! x

Hey Bukola,
First of all, I love your home page image of you in that kickass outfit, middle tight perspective in a grocery store – it screams statement and personality and it inspires me to explore different perspectives and locations on my next shoot. Thank you!
As for your time in Croatia – I am so nicely jelly of you. All the while I lived in Europe, I never took advantage of my proximity to it by traveling there. Over the past five years, Croatia’s tourism has grown exponentially, which is fantastic and with it comes more information. The more I learn about Croatia and the experiences people have there, the more I want to visit the place. I had an opportunity to study with a few Croatians during a summer program and learned that the Dalmatian is actually their national dog. It’s a breed specific to the Dalmatian Islands – go figure!
Anywho, nice piece. I’ll go get myself some ice-cream and pretend I’m living it up in the Adriatic, now.
Best,
Jess
